It takes a village..
"It takes a village to raise a child". We sure heard that one before, and we believe this to be very true. So we decided to build that village for our children.
Vila Akoya is a child-centred project
Everything we do is with our little ones in mind. To create an inspiring, safe and supportive environment for our children to grow up in.
Our kids programme contains of lots of spaces and activities designed for the little, and the not-so-little ones.
We have the Akoya Academy: Arete, a supportive place for our homeschooled children from age 6 up, and for the homeschooling parents.
And The Coddiwomplers, a space with activities for the littler ones between 2 and 6 year old.
Daily Activities
Creative Arts & Knowledge
Ceramics, woodwork, natural building, weaving, photography, improv, painting, writing, music, sustainability workshops, languages, cooperative living and conflict resolution skills.
Movement and Stillness
Climbing, dance, trail running, archery, martial arts, horseback riding, swimming, fencing, table tennis, yoga, tai-chi, breathwork, meditation and mindfulness.
Practical Skills
Permaculture, cooking, fermentation, foraging, animal care, herbal medicine, survival skills, first aid, beekeeping, composting, construction, carpentry, welding and sewing.
The Coddiwomplers
Ages 2 to 5
Coddiwomple (verb): To travel in a purposeful manner towards a vague destination.
For the littlest ones we have lots to do! Join the Coddiwomples; with daily (drop-in) classes, workshops and activities, all mostly outdoor.
We also have on-site babysitters, available for private babysitting.
The Akoya Academy: Arete
Ages 6 to 13
Arete (noun): The lifelong pursuit of excellence, moral virtue and the art of becoming the fullest, bravest and most capable version of yourself.
Most families joining Vila Akoya are homeschooling families like us; parents who teach their own children, following their chosen curriculum. Within the project we will have loads to do for the kids. Arete is set up to support the homeschooling children and parents, and has loads of extracurricular activities, classes and workshops outside of the academic hours.
We believe that it’s important for our kids to spends their days mostly outside, learning about all schools of life. The activities and workshops from The Campus will flow into the extracurriculars for the kids, with most facilitators and parents hosting daily classes for the little ones – and the bigger ones!
